Around 1:40 a.m., the two officers, who were on patrol in the East Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens, saw a man on a motorbike driving the wrong way down 82nd Street near 23rd Avenue, Edward A. Caban, the police commissioner, said at a news conference on Monday.

The officers, who were in a vehicle, tried to pull the man over, Mr. Caban said. The man got off the bike and ran.

The two officers got out of their vehicle and chased the man for several blocks before the man fired multiple shots at them, Mr. Caban said. The officers then returned fire, he said.
